Wapakoneta Police Chief Russel Hunlock to retire Sept. 15

WAPAKONETA — The Wapakoneta Police Department announced Wednesday that Chief Russel Hunlock will retire on Sept. 15. Hunlock has been the chief of police since Oct. 2009.

Hunlock’s law enforcement experience spans more than 27 years, with 26 years at the Wapakoneta Police Department. He started as a patrol officer, and was promoted to lieutenant in Feb. 2008. He was the department’s K-9 handler for 17 years, handling three dogs during that time. He is one of the longest running K-9 handlers in the department’s history.

Hunlock stated he is “grateful to have spent my time in service with the Wapakoneta Police Department.” He added that the city of Wapakoneta has “afforded me a tremendous amount of opportunities to enhance my law enforcement career,” and that he “could not be more proud of the accomplishments of professionalism, quality service, caring attitude and positive community relations we achieved as a police department.”
