Contractors attend pre-bid meeting for Fair Haven

SIDNEY — More than 20 interested contractors attended the pre-bid meeting Tuesday afternoon for Fair Haven Shelby County Home’s addition project.

As a county-owned institution, the bids are required to be public and are being accepted by the Shelby County commissioners. Commissioner Tony Barhorst was in attendance.

Fair Haven Executive Director Anita Miller clarified the project goals in an email.

“This project is a replacement of beds,” she wrote. “The rooms are currently semi-private and in the new build, being converted to private rooms with private baths — there will still be four companion suites for couples.”

Miller said that there would be 66 private rooms and four companion suits to bring the new addition to a total of 74 beds. Eight of the private rooms will be bariatric rooms with ceiling lifts. More construction is planned, and renovation of the rest of the building will bring the total bed capacity to 125.

The architecture for the new wing was completed by Freytag & Associates Inc., whose principal architect, Dan Freytag, led the Tuesday afternoon meeting. He gave an overview of what was needed for the single prime contract. The work categories needed are, according Freytag’s explanation, general construction, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, site work and selected demolition.

After the initial meeting, contractors were allowed to visit the construction site and connection point to the existing building.

Bids for the project are due Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. Any substitution requests must be made by Friday, Oct. 13, and any requests for information are due Wednesday, Oct. 18.
