SIDNEY — Christian Academy Schools in Sidney is holding a Spiritual Emphasis Week for students in grades six through 12 starting Oct. 9.

It is a five-day event that administrators are hoping will move students towards a deeper walk with Christ. During the first three days, members of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) will be leading sessions for the students to participate in. YWAM is an interdenominational, nonprofit, Christian missionary group. Members are travelling from Louisville, Kentucky, to lead the students.

Lee Searcy, Christian Academy High School principal, spoke about the program, calling it “fortunate” to have YWAM come and lead the week.

“The sessions are designed to strengthen the students’ faith and maybe have some of them recommit to Christ or possibly new committments,” he said.

Searcy said the last two days of the week would be outreach missions, with students possibly leaving the Sidney area to complete their missions. No solid plans were made yet for the outreach portion of the week.

YWAM, who led a similar week last year, will teach sessions based around the nature and character of God, identity and sharing the gospel. Derek Culp, a missionary with YWAM Louisville, will help to lead the team.

“We want people to know who Jesus is,” he said. “We want to share who God is, because once we know who God is, then we can move into who we are.”

Culp said that his team has been led by missionaries who were trained by YWAM and includes students from YWAM who were coming to gain more hands-on leadership experience. Culp helped with last year’s program at Christian Academy Schools.

“We believe ‘missions’ is not just overseas, so we shared what God put in us and had a good time with the students,” he said. “It’s really cool for me because I went to high school at Graham in St. Paris. It’s coming home.”

YWAM will be teaching at Christian Academy Schools Oct. 9 through Oct. 11.
