Holiday Horse Parade returns Saturday evening

PIQUA — The Holiday Horse Parade will kick off the holiday season as it returns to downtown Piqua tonight, Nov. 11, starting at 7 p.m.

Lorna Swisher, executive director of Mainstreet Piqua, said that the parade will see nearly 40 units, almost doubling the number from year.

“Each unit could be anything from a single stable with one horse … to a full hitch with horses,” Swisher said.

The parade will also feature three drill teams.

“We’re really excited about that,” Swisher said. “The one thing that is so special about this parade is that the units are lit up.”

Lights will be on the horses and carriages in the parade. “It’s just a really visually beautiful parade,” Swisher said.

The parade route will go through downtown on Main Street as well as along High Street to Downing Street to Ash Street to Wayne Street and to Greene Street before going back down Main Street.

“We’re making the parade route significantly longer so people won’t have to be as bunched up as they were last year,” Swisher said.

Swisher credited the idea of holding the Holiday Horse Parade to community member Tim Hutton, who is a local horse enthusiast. Swisher said Hutton approached Mainstreet Piqua about holding this event like similar parades in Greenville.

“He just wanted to be able to bring that opportunity to Piqua,” Swisher said.

She added that residents enjoyed the parade last year: “That’s why we’re doing it. It’s something new for our citizens to enjoy.”
