NB Council approves sledding hill

NEW BREMEN — Approval was given to begin construction of a sledding hill in Bremenfest Park at the March 12 New Bremen Council meeting.

In a report to council prior to the vote, Jerry McClannan of Mote and Associates said the estimated cost of the completed project would be $24,000. Originally, the cost to construct the new sledding hill was set at around $50,000 but Mayor Jeff Pape said coordination of this project with a large street reconstruction project at Eastmoor and Front set to begin in 2018 will allow fill taken from the street project to be used to construct the hill, defraying the cost to haul in new soil. He added that council began planning this project following many requests to them after the old sledding hill was changed due to construction of the Lockkeepers House Visitor Center at Lock One Park.

Work is expected to start in late April with a completion date in October 2018. The new construction, to be south of the community pool, is planned to top 20 feet and have a variety of slopes and pitches.

The council approved two financial actions suggested by the state Auditor.

For one, the council approved the creation of a separate account for Mayor’s Court Funds. Also, council approved the payment in 2018 of $100,000, which will retire the $600,000 loan for the new electrical building.

Pape reported those wishing to purchase a memorial bench can now go to the New Bremen website and print out a downloadable form. In other news, he said there will be a May 19 open house for the new police building from noon to 3 pm. He also noted two community events coming up, the town garage sales on April 20 and 21 and Clean Up Day May 5.
