ST. MARYS — On Saturday, May 7, 2016, the JTD Hospital Foundation held its Third Annual Landen’s 5K, a run/walk for SIDS awareness in St. Marys.

Landen’s 5K was named in honor of Landen Phlipot, the son of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital employee Joey Phlipot and his wife Jessica. Landen was born May 3, 2011, and passed all to soon on July 30, 2011, of SIDS. Through Joey and Jessica’s effort to make a difference in honor of their son, the Landen Phlipot Healthy Baby Fund was established in 2012.

The Landen Phlipot Healthy Baby Fund was established to provide education to parents about SIDS and to provide each baby born at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital with a Halo SleepSack, a blanket used to swaddle the baby as well as eliminate loose blankets from gathering around a baby’s face. Landen will be remembered with each delivery at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital and has a plaque in his honor located in the OB department.

“A few years ago I became aware of Joey and Jessica’s loss and their work with the Healthy Baby Fund. Being involved in a few 5Ks, I thought this would be a good fundraiser for the Healthy Baby Fund. I reached out to the JTD Hospital Foundation, Joey, and connected with our OB and Community Outreach Coordinator. Three years ago, our first Landen’s 5K was held on May 3. During the planning we learned that May 3 was Landen’s birthday. So, I knew at that time that this was meant to be,” Tracy Smith, chair of the Landen’s 5K Committee said.

Linda Haines, executive director of the JTD Hospital Foundation said, “We are very appreciative to our sponsors of this event and would like to thank Crown Battery, G-W Tool, Warehouse Equipment Products, Buschur Dairy Farms, Inc., Jason This, Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio, Wagner’s IGA, R.F. Woehrmyer Concrete Const. Inc., Sharon & Dave Eyink, OPS Buildings, Dr. Efren Aganon, Front Porch Candle Co., Otto & Laura Schwieterman, Mark One Manufacturing, North Hampton Family Care, Inc., Varsity Lanes, St. Marys Chrysler, Plus One Professionals & Minster Bank. We would also like to thank Dannon for providing yogurt for the event.”

Haines continued, “Landen’s 5K was developed as an extension of the Healthy Baby Fund. The funds from Landen’s 5K will be used to establish a scholarship in Landen’s memory. This year’s 5K raised over $6,000. It’s a wonderful thing to see the JTDMH family come together to work on such a special project. I want to thank Tracy Smith for chairing the event. I also want to thank committee members Amy Becker, Lesia Arnett, Joey Phlipot, Carrie Widman and our many volunteers for their time and energies given to this special event.”
