Wilson to host competitive blood drive

SIDNEY — Wilson Health is teaming up with Shelby County police, fire and EMS departments, as well as the Community Blood Center of Dayton, to recruit donors and help raise awareness of the need for blood donations.

On Aug. 29, the second annual Heroes Behind the Badge blood drive event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in the lower level of the Wilson Health Professional Building.

“Our local heroes are outstanding examples of people giving of themselves to help others,” said Kathy Pleiman, Community Blood Center representative. “Please join our heroes and donate blood at the hospital to help keep the local blood supply at safe levels for area patients like those at Wilson Health.”

Leading up to the blood drive, Heroes Behind the Badge will spotlight various lifesaving services in the community, and individuals will share their stories and encourage others to join them. The friendly competition will have the three different entities facing off to see who can bring the most colleagues, family and friends to donate and vote for their team. The team with the most votes will be announced, and the winner will receive a plaque and bragging rights in the community. The Sidney Police Department won the challenge in 2016.

The public is encouraged to donate, and donors have the choice to award their donations to the departments they wish to see win the competition. Donors must be at least 17 (16 with a signed, parent-consent form), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health on the day of the blood drive. Take a photo ID with one’s full name. It is recommended to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood.

“Improving the health of our community is at the heart of our mission,” said Mark Dooley, president and CEO of Wilson Health. “Taking a small amount of time out of your day and donating blood can make a large impact on the health and vitality of the people in our community and ultimately save lives.”

Appointments are encouraged. Visit www.donortime.com to register. For information, call 498-5312.
