La Comedia opens ‘Steel Magnolias’

SPRINGBORO — La Comedia Dinner Theatre, 765 W. Central Ave., Springboro, has opened its 2017 season with the comedy, “Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling.”

It will run through Feb. 26.

The plot concerns the women of Chinquapin, Louisiana, who gather in Truvy’s hair salon to get their hair done, gossip and trade opinions about everyday life. The drama begins on the morning of Shelby’s wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next few years, including Shelby’s decison to have a child, despite having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision.

The production was directed by Chris Beiser. In the cast are Hannah Brown as Shelby, Janet Brucken as Ouiser, Linda Dew as M’Lynn, Christyn New as Annelle, Cheryl Salzman as Clairee and Karie-Lee Sutherland as Truvy.

The theater offers themed dishes as part of its buffet dinner. For this production, the menu features pepper-glazed ham, pinto beans with peppers and onions, cornbread, Louisiana red beans and rice, and fried biscuits with apple butter in addition to staples barbecued chicken, fried Norwegian cod, kielbasa and sauerkraut, garlic potatoes with onions, sugar snap peas and a vegetable medley. Dessert is peach cobbler with ice cream. The meal includes a salad and the theater’s famous sweet potato souffle.
