Kiwanians hear about recycling center

SIDNEY — Jim Skora, Jack Dewitt, Susan Helterbran and Tim Metzner addressed members of the Kiwanis Club of Sidney, recently.

Skora is with GT Environmental, Dewitt is the operation coordinator and Metzner is the recycling coordinator at the Shelby County Recycling Center (SCRC).

The center, at 1600 Riverside Drive, is continuing to undergo changes, they said. The SCRC has gained new equipment to streamline the recycling system from duel- to single-stream. Along with new equipment, the SCRC will be installing solar panels to become more efficient. A grand reopening is scheduled for July 19 to reveal the new addition. This solar system will have an annual savings of $6,540 or about 50 percent of the project base load. This is about how much energy six homes use every year.

The Sidney-Shelby County Health Department along with the SCRC will host Super Saturday Recycling Day on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. This event is to help recycle things that are not accepted in the curbside recycling bins. Items that will be accepted include electronic items, documents for shredding, books, and medications for disposal.
