SIDNEY — Sidney and the Shelby County Chapter of the Northwest Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition will participate in a global event to raise awareness about human trafficking, Oct. 14, on the courtsquare in downtown Sidney.

Called the Walk for Freedom, the purpose of the event is to shine a spotlight on the 27 million men, women and children who are still trapped in slavery today. The Sidney walk will begin at 1 p.m., following registration at 12:30 p.m. Participants should wear black.

With 300 walks in 28 countries participating in last year’s event, A21, a global antihuman-trafficking organization, aims to raise even more funds and awareness with the fourth annual Walk For Freedom this year. The goal is to raise $1 million to restore the lives of 2,000 human trafficking survivors.

Christine Caine, A21’s founder, said in a release, “One step at a time. One dollar at a time. One life at a time. We will abolish modern-day slavery.”

The Walk For Freedom’s key distinguishing factor is a single-file line of participants dressed in black, with black tape covering their mouths to represent the 27 million slaves who have no voice. As the line moves throughout each city, information about human trafficking is distributed to onlookers.
