SIDNEY — Todd Loe will be the featured artist at Gateway Arts Council’s Gallery, 216 N. Miami Ave., in August.

Loe’s show, “Wide Open,” will run Aug. 4 through Aug. 31. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m., Aug 4. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Loe is a Columbus artist who does soft pastel paintings that explore a variety of themes. His dreamy landscape paintings reflect a fascination with peace and solitude and explore the relationship between imagination and reality using color to define shapes and create the illusion of depth. The process begins with a photo taken by the artist. Using the photograph, he constructs a composition with pastel on paper. He then moves outside and paints en plein air to more realistically reference his choice of colors.

His portraits often impart an impactful realism. He views portraits as “people landscapes.” He often uses a photograph for the initial inspiration and then uses his own translation of colors and forms to create a new image

“If I can figure out how to put a sunset in an earlobe, I will,” he said.
