Piano students place at contest

ADA — The Midwest Music Teachers Association’s Midwest Duettist Competition was Oct. 27 at Ohio Northern University.

Eleven teams from Ka-Jens Piano Studio in Sidney, under the direction of Kathleen Jendrusik, the founder and chairwoman of the competition, competed with other teams from throughout the Midwest of the state. The duet pairs were required to play one classical piece in formal attire and one creative piece in full costume, with a skit and props and makeup relating to their compositions. They were graded on poise and presentation, creativity, clear melody, phrasing, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and how well they conveyed the spirit of the music.

There were five levels of difficulty. In First Level Elementary, fourth place went to Alice and Johnny Chrisman, children of Heather and Joseph Chrisman; sixth place, to Amelie Phillips, daughter of Sonya and Keith Phillips, and Corinne Smith, daughter of Karen and Doug Smith, all from Sidney.

Level Two Late Elementary: first place went to Amelie Phillips and Cassie Heath, daughter of Molly and Scott Heath, of Sidney; fourth place, to Alice Chrisman and Haley Cox, daughter of Mindy and Aaron Cox, of Quincy.

Level Three Early Intermediate: second place went to Meredith Klein, daughter of Sarah and Eric Klein, of Anna, and Lola Chambers, daughter of Lorraine Rose, of Sidney; third place, to Alayna Rindler, daughter of June and Alan Rindler, and Zachary Ahrens, son of Joyce and Robert Ahrens, all of Versailles.

Level Four Intermediate: first place went to Lola and Loralei Chambers, children of Lorraine Rose, of Sidney; second place, to Liliana Phillips, daughter of Sonya and Keith Phillips, of Sidney, and Colton Smith, son of Karen and Doug Smith, of Anna.

Level Five Late Intermediate: first place went to Martha Chrisman, daughter of Heather and Joseph Chrisman, of Sidney, and Luke Hamaker, son of Stacy and Shawn Hamaker, of Fletcher; second place, to Alayna Rindler, daughter of June and Alan Rindler, and Grace Francis, daughter of Donna and Russell Francis, all of Versailles; third place, to Myla Cox, daughter of Mindy and Aaron Cox, of Quincy, and Brooklyn Jackson, daughter of Nichole and Shane Jackson, of Troy.

Six of eight creative category trophies went to Johnny and Alice Chrisman, Haley Cox and Alice Chrisman, Cassie Heath and Amelie Phillips, Meredith Klein and Lola Chambers, Liliana Phillips and Colton Smith, and Myla Cox and Brooklyn Jackson.
