Gearing up for the spring season

0

Spring is in the air! This is such an exciting time at The People’s Garden located at 209 S. Brooklyn Ave. in Sidney behind the Agape Distribution building. We are your local community garden for Shelby County and have been going strong since 2013.

Currently, we have three garden coordinators, community volunteers, and public organizations that are interested in helping this season! We have available garden beds to rent for $10 which includes the garden bed, soil, seeds, and advice as desired from our garden coordinators. Our learning center will be offering basic garden classes and workshops so be on the lookout for event dates and times. We will also be having a specialty herb garden prepared by Kendra Ayton. We also have Deb, a local resident from Quincy, starting seeds indoors for us.

Our first workday will be held on Sunday, March 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. We will be preparing the garden beds for planting, building garden beds, repairing existing garden beds, renting garden beds and planting new seeds. Please join us for an afternoon of gardening fun!

Another worthy update for the garden includes a donation of a new riding and push mower courtesy of Sidney American Legion Baseball, purchased from Koenig supply in Botkins. We are going to need a small metal barn to store the mowers and garden tools so are researching local manufacturers. We will be hosting a fundraiser in the near future. If you would be interested in donating toward our barn please contact John Geissler at Agape Distribution 937-498-4368.

We are always eager for new volunteers to help us. If you, your family, or organization would be interested in volunteering or renting a garden bed please message us through our Facebook page titled “Agape Distribution The People’s Garden” or email Conelia Dixon at [email protected].

We also welcome emails about your gardening ideas and feedback. After all we are your local community garden and look forward to as much community participation as possible.
