March 3, 1916

Members from 22 of the 45 districts of the county were present for the county school board meeting in the assembly room of the Court House yesterday afternoon. Much of the discussion centered around the appearance of the school buildings in the county with particular emphasis on cleanliness and sanitation. A splendid spirit prevailed at the meeting and showed the members of the different boards are willing to sacrifice their time for the good of their schools.

Mrs. Lee Dollinger was elected president of the Literature Department of the Women’s Club, when the members met last evening in the home of Mrs. L.S. Thompson. Mrs. John Ziessler was named vice president and Miss Gertrude Bushwaw, secretary and treasurer.

March 3, 1941

The Shelby County selective service board today received advance notice calling for 15 more men from Shelby County for military training on March 21. This is in addition to the one for 11 men scheduled to leave on March 7.

Dave Shelton, of Sidney, has been elected a member of the executive board of the Dayton Miami Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The election took place at the annual meeting of Scout leaders in Dayton on Saturday. Shelton becomes the third Sidney man named to the board. Re-elected at the meeting were W.R. Minton and Urban Doorley.

March 3, 1966

The Sidney Daily News and Radio Station WMVR were recipients Wednesday of Kiwanis International’s Distinguished Service Awards, presented during special ceremonies held in conjunction with the Sidney Kiwanis Club’s regular noon meeting on Wednesday. Kiwanis President Herbert Schlater made the presentations. Schlater also presented an award to Kiwanian Arthur Sprague. This was the Kiwanis Legion of Honor certificate marking Sprague’s 30th year as a member of Kiwanis.

Altrusa Club named new officers Wednesday evening and planned to continue the present Club International and local project it has been fostering for a number of years. Mrs. Don Schurr was elected president to succeed Mrs. Thomas Pettit, who will retire after serving two years. Mrs. Bernard Santo will be first vice president, Mrs. Arlene Accuntius, second vice president; Mrs. Pettit, immediate past president; Mrs. Edwin Haas, recording secretary; Mrs. Roy Frantz, corresponding secretary; board members, Mrs. Charles Schaffer, two years; Mrs. Clyde Taylor and Mrs. Raymond A. Sexauer, one year.

March 3, 1991

The Shelby County League basketball players of the year have been chosen. Botkins High School Trojan Chris Monnin has averaged 20.3 points per game. He is a senior. On the ladies side, the player of the year is Stacy Ritter. The standout from Houston is hitting 20.8 points per game. Ritter recently broke the 1,000 point barrier in her career.

Sidney has once again claimed an honor from the National Arbor Day Foundation. It is a Tree City USA honoree. The announcement was made by city manager Bill Barlow. Sidney has received this award a number of times in recent years.
