Oct. 23, 1915

Bruno Tripodi, the young Italian who was tried on a murder charge in common pleas court here several years ago and acquitted by the jury, has been ordered deported by the government. He has been a patient at Longview sanitarium about a year and has shown improvement in recent months. During the hearing on deportation, the young man said he feared for his life if he was returned to Italy. His fears are that the friends of his alleged victim will kill him.

Six young people escaped serious injury last night when the car driven by Alva Hagerman skidded in attempting to pass another auto and overturned in a ditch about three quarters of a mile south of Pemberton. The other five were Duane Mohr, and Carl Huston of Quincy; Misses lola Ward, Lola Davidson, and Gladys Littlejohn. One of the boys managed to get out from under the car and lift it so the occupants could get out. Outside of being frightened, the occupants were none the worse for their experience. The auto was badly wrecked.

Oct. 23, 1940

Almost positive identification of the escaped criminal, sought in the Robert Young kidnapping and robbery case, as a former resident of Shelby county was gained by Sheriff Truman Pitts last night in a confession made by Joe Hill Barnsdale at the county jail to the sheriff and his deputy James Blackford. Barnsdale told his story about 10 o’clock p.m. after being confronted earlier in the evening by Deputy Sheriff William Herper, of Hamilton county, who was the first victim of kidnapping and assault in the pair’s escapade through Ohio. Barnsdale said his companion suggested they come to Sidney since he had formerly lived in this area.

At the mid-week report meeting of Boy’s Club drive workers last evening the total of over`$1,000 was reported as paid in either cash or pledges. The team of Leo Shields was the first to report 100% completion. The team is composed of Dr. Paul Maurer, Dr. H.E. Crimm, Dr. W.W. Meade, Dr. Clayton Kiracofe, Dwight Parks, and E.J. Garmhausen.

Oct. 23, 1965

“This building is a crowning architectural jewel in this section of the state.” With these words Daniel H. Porter, director of the Ohio Historical Society, Saturday morning unveiled the marker designating the Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association as an Ohio historical site. Formal acceptance of the recognition accorded the local financial institution’s building was made by Joseph B. Cook, vice president of the Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association. For years it has been a haven for architecture classes from colleges and universities throughout this section of the nation who make annual pilgrimages to visit and study the building.

CHICAGO — Leo Durocher signed today for a three-year term as manager of the Chicago Cubs with compete authority.

Elmer Allen of Sidney recently received a sapphire 4-H clover in Columbus to honor his 35 years of service as a 4-H volunteer. The Cavat Coal Co. and the 4-H Foundation sponsored the awards presented at the 4-H Advisors 47th Annual Recognition Program at Ohio State University.

Sara J. Stewart, daughter of Mrs. Patrick Stewart is a candidate for homecoming queen at Ohio Northern University. She is a senior majoring in health and physical education. ONU’s Homecoming will be Saturday. The King and Queen will be announced at halftime of the football game against Marietta. At ONU, Stewart is active in women’s volleyball team., Health and Physical Education Club, and Phi Epsion Kappa health, physical education and sports honorary.
