Young Republicans visit D.C.

SIDNEY — The Shelby County Republican Party recently sent five Young Republicans to Washington, D.C. as part of its effort to reinvigorate the chapter in the county. The Young Republicans who took part in the trip were Aaron Heilers, Lance Symonds, Nathan Lotz, John Pence and Curt Schafer.

The group had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Jim Jordan and Sen. Rob Portman and discussed a wide range of topics including Speaker John Boehner’s resignation, re-election campaigns, and how to get involved in politics.

“Being able to sit down with our elected officials was a rewarding experience. They were very gracious with their time and encouraged our efforts to be more involved in the political process” said Shafer, trip attendee.

They also receive training at the Leadership Institute, a nonprofit organization that specializes in training conservatives on how to succeed in politics, government, and the media. While at the Leadership Institute, the Shelby County Young Republicans focused on campaign messaging and how to better organize a local Young Republican chapter. The group also toured the Capitol, Pentagon, and Supreme Court.

“It was great to have the opportunity to meet with so many people and gain a better understanding of what is going on in Washington. I would encourage anyone interested in politics to contact the local party to see how they can make a difference,” said Schafer.

The Shelby County Republican Party is enthusiastic about the renewed interest in the Young Republican Chapter. The Shelby County Young Republicans plan to continue its renewed effort to engage the county’s young Republicans. A similar trip to Columbus to meet with state officials and show attendees how government works at the state level is being planned as well as a future trip to Washington, D.C. The chapter is also looking for volunteers to help with local campaigns. If anyone is interested in helping or attending one of these events contact the Shelby County Republican Party by visiting their website at www.shelbycountyrepublicanparty.com or by emailing Executive Chairman Julie Ehemann at [email protected].
