Police identify body found in Great Miami River

SIDNEY — The identity of the man who was found in the Great Miami River Saturday night has been released.

According to Sidney Police Captain Jerry Tangeman, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office had identified the man as Steven Helton, 47, of Sidney. The preliminary autopsy results have found the cause of death was drowning. There were no signs of injury on Helton’s body.

In a press release, Tangeman said the department is investigating the circumstances which lead to Helton being in the river.

Helton’s partially submerged body was discovered by a man who was fishing in the river. The body was recovered from the river by the Sidney Fire Department’s rescue boat around 7 p.m. Saturday.

The incident occurred near the 500 block of East Court Street.
