SIDNEY — Like mother, like daughter.

Emma Tobie, 3, of Sidney, was named 2018 Little Miss Shelby County Fair, Sunday, July 22. Her mother, Kelly Tobie, had won the same title in 1991. Emma’s dad is Dexter Tobie.

Landon Everett, 4, of Sidney, son of Stephanie and Tyler Everett, was named 2018 Little Mister Shelby County Fair.

The contest took place in the Entertainment Tent on the opening day of the 158th Shelby County Fair. Organizer Gary Strasser, manager of Clancy’s, which sponsored the pageant, said there was record particpation by youngsters this year.

Thirteen girls and 10 boys dressed in their finest and spoke with mistress of ceremonies Rikki Unterbrink, youth services director of Amos Memorial Public Library. She asked them what their favorite foods were, what they wanted to be when they grew up, what animals they liked and what toys they played with. Each was invited to sing a song.

Emma said she would like to be Disney princess Elsa because Elsa wears a long cape. She likes leopards, because they have polka dots on their fur. She said she wanted to dance and Unterbrink cleared the floor for her, but in the end, Emma sang the ABC song.

Gregarious Landon spoke at length about ghosts. When Unterbrink moved the microphone toward herself for another question, Landon pulled it back.

“I’m not done yet,” he told her. She chuckled. He looked at her with a very serious face.

“Don’t laugh,” he instructed her, whereupon the whole audience erupted in laughter.

“It’s OK,” Unterbrink told his stricken look, “they like you.” Landon’s song was “Ghostbusters.”

Each child won a sash, a trophy and $50 cash.

Judges were Ed Went, of Sidney, a realtor with Merritt Real Estate Professionals in Wapakoneta; Travis Unterbrink, of Lima, a business technology consultant with Donnellon McCarthy Enterprises in Lima; and Mel Wildermuth, of Noblesville, Indiana, vice president of administration at Clancy’s.
