TROY — Habitat for Humanity of Miami and Shelby Counties, Ohio (HFHMSCO) is hosting a HAC Open House and Affiliate Volunteer Recognition program on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 150 E. Race St., Troy, between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Vision for the Habitat Activity Center (HAC) was a result of relocating the ReStore in July 2016, vacating 5,000 square feet of space at 150 E. Race St. It was not economical to sell the building and relocate the Habitat offices, thus determining a productive way to use the space became a primary objective.
The HAC facility will be used to benefit HFHMSCO affiliate’s Construction and Repair programs, as well as support community carpentry and woodwork projects via an application submission. Additionally, classroom and hands-on education and training programs will be conducted for Habitat families, non-profit organizations, and the “general” public on several subjects related to home ownership and maintenance, insurance, safety, landscaping, energy use, etc.
The HAC, being an enclosed environment, will enable us to keep community volunteers engaged with Habitat throughout the year. It will also give volunteers a chance to learn construction and carpentry skills under the supervision of Habitat Pros.
“We (Habitat) look forward to engaging the local community – especially non-profit organizations – in providing them an opportunity to submit project applications for carpentry and/or woodworking projects which will serve their constituents” said William Horstman, executive director and COO.
The HAC program will start at noon, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 12:40 p.m.
The HFHMSCO Volunteer Recognition program will begin with a luncheon at 1 p.m. followed by the recognition of the male and female Volunteers of the Year for multiple years.

Special recognition will be given to Airstream; Emerson Climate Technologies; Cargill, Crane Pumps and Systems, and the Habitat Pros who have given much of their time and talent to various construction builds and repair projects, the Habitat ReStore, service on committees and board, and the HAC.
“The most critical part of any successful non-profit is its volunteers,” according to Horstman. “We are fortunate to have some of the best.”
The Volunteer Recognition program will take place at 2 p.m. The public is invited to both events.
