Caring at Christmas program benefits hospice patients

SIDNEY — Instead of mailing Christmas cards to friends and family this year, area residents may choose to donate the money they would have spent on cards and postage to “Caring at Christmas,” an annual program that raises money for charity.

This year marks the 26th year for Caring at Christmas and Wilson Health Hospice has once again been chosen to receive the donations. This program was founded by local Shelby County residents Sara Barhorst, Vicki Edwards and Holly Urbanc. After 25 years, the founders are transitioning the program to ensure its continued existence to Connie Barhorst, Shannon Lachey and Kara Sollmann.

Patients and families often turn to Wilson Health Hospice when active, curative treatments are no longer helpful and they are ready for comfort care. The hospice staff works hard to make patients as comfortable as possible and to make their days a little better by providing quality compassionate care at the end of life.

Recently, Social Worker Tracey Oduro received a call from a hospice patient that their plumbing was not working and they did not have them money to repair it. With the help of the Wilson Health Foundation and the Angel Fund, their plumbing was repaired very quickly. This is just one example of how these funds are used. The continual support of our community is truly appreciated and important to support the patients of Wilson Health Hospice.

Anyone who would like to donate to Caring at Christmas may do so by mailing their donation to: Wilson Health Hospice, Attn: Cashier, 915 W. Michigan St., Sidney, OH, 45365. Make all checks payable to Wilson Health Hospice for tax purposes. Donations can also be made online at www.wilsonhealth.org/foundation.

The community is invited to join in the circle of caring. Shortly before Christmas, an acknowledgement will appear in the Sidney Daily News listing the names of all donors that contributed to this year’s program. In order to be included in this year’s acknowledgement donations must be received by Dec. 7.
