FBI says TimeWarner ‘rr.com’passwords leaked

SIDNEY — Time Warner Cable (TWC) announced Wednesday that as many as 320,000 customers may have had their emails and passwords leaked.

In a statement released to NBC and broadcast by Sidney Daily News partner station, WDTN-TV, Thursday, the cable company said, “there are no indications that TWC’s systems were breached,” and suggested the mails may have been acquired earlier by other means, such as malware, phishing attacks on subscribers or security breaches at companies that stored TWC customer information.

“Time Warner Cable was recently notified by the FBI that some of our customers’ email addresses, including account passwords, may have been compromised. Our understanding is that the compromise had nothing to do with TWC’s systems or processes, and we have found no evidence of a breach in our systems that operate and secure email accounts for our customers,” said TWC spokesman Michael Hogan in an email to the Daily News.

All of the stolen emails and passwords that were reported to TWC by the FBI were part of TWC’s Roadrunner service. Customers with emails ending in “@rr.com” may be affected.

“TWC is proactively reaching out to those customers who could potentially be impacted so they can take precautionary measures to protect their accounts by changing their password using a strong, unique alternative. These email addresses were among those that were likely previously stolen from non-TWC sources and possibly sold along with email addresses serviced by other providers,” Hogan said.

Customers can update their email account passwords by going to the URL, http://twc.com/emailpassword, and following the instructions.

If customers have questions, they can contact the TWC Care team at 844-899-8913. Time Warner Cable Business Class customers should call 866-892-4249.

WDTN reported that the cable company is now working with the FBI and that another TWC spokesperson indicated that data provided by the FBI was part of a wider disclosure including other ISPs.
