COLUMBUS — State Sen. Keith Faber honored Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart this past Wednesday for being named the 2015 Ferris E. Lucas Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Lenhart, who was chosen from among 100 candidates across the United States, will accept the award Sunday in Baltimore, Md. during the National Sheriffs’ Conference. He was nominated by Chief Deputy James R. Frye.

Previous honorees have come from Las Vegas, Nev. and Los Angeles, Calif. Frye said earlier this year that Lenhart’s career “speaks volumes for the type of leader he is and what he brings to the table. He returned as sheriff during a traumatic time for the office and I truly believe he has turned around the image of the office.”

Lenhart has served in law enforcement for 40-plus years and also farms in Shelby County.

Watch next week’s Sidney Daily News for a report on Lenhart’s acceptance of the Sheriff of the Year award.
