DEGRAFF — A Sidney woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash near the village of DeGraff Thursday evening.
According to Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Mary Velazco, 59, of Sidney, died at Mary Rutan Hospital (MRH), where she was taken by Indian Lake EMS, after the crash on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 4:43 p.m.
Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a crash with injuries at the intersection of state Route 235 and state Route 47 west in DeGraff. Information provided by the Sheriff’s Office said a tan 2000 Dodge Durango, driven by Laura Velazco, 34, of Sidney, was traveling westbound on state Route 47 when it pulled from the stop sign at state Route 235 and into the path of a southbound, maroon 2006 Ford F250 truck, that was driven by Jeff Watkins, 53, of Sidney.
The Durango was struck on the passenger side front door. Watkins was pulling a trailer loaded with an asphalt sealing machine. Both vehicles came to stop in the grass off the southwest corner of the intersection, where they also took out a stop sign.
Mary Velazco, the front seat passenger, was entrapped in the Durango and was removed by non-mechanical means, where life saving measures were started. She was then transported to MRH, where she was later declared deceased at 5:37 p.m. Rear passenger, Jason Arnett, 42, of Sidney, was transported to MRH by Rosewood Squad.
Watkins was treated at the scene by Miami Township EMS. Seat belt usage is unknown at this time.
Wrens Towing towed both vehicles, the trailer and asphalt machine from the scene. The Ohio Department of Transportation responded to place a temporary stop sign, and the DeGraff Fire Department provided traffic control. Squad members driving an Integrity Rescue Squad were traveling through the area at the time of the crash and stopped to provide medical assistance.
The crash is still under investigation by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
Mary Velazco’s funeral arrangements is pending with Adams Funeral Home.
