POWER, the Shelby County United Way Womenճ Initiative, members sit with City of Sidney Recreation Specialist Jennie Rogers, fourth from left, of Sidney, Wednesday, March 9, after giving her a check for $1,000 to help fund the City of Sidney’s new summer backpack program. The backpack program is an extension of the city’s summer free lunch program which hands out free meals to kids in need at parks in Sidney on weekdays over the summer. City workers noticed that some kids were getting little food over the weekend so they decided to send food with the kids to eat over the weekend. The POWER members visiting Rogers are, left to right, POWER Volunteer and Mentor Chair Jana Potts, of Sidney, POWER Projects and Programs Chair Mary Beth Monnier, of Maplewood, POWER Chair Shelly Ginter, of Maplewood, and POWER Finance Chair Cindy Ernst, of Sidney. The POWER group also looked over some of the food that would be given out to kids this summer. People wanting to donate to the summer backpack program can contact Jennie Rogers at [email protected] Luke Gronneberg | Sidney Daily News
