March 18, 1916

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis and two week old grandson, Richard Budkie, had a narrow escape from serious injury last night, when the taxi in which they were riding was struck by a C H & D train at the North Street crossing. The taxi was being driven by John Lauterbur. Fortunately, the engine struck the front of the car, throwing it backwards. None of the occupants suffered injuries.

Harry Custenborder has purchased a half interest in the Knupp Garage of Erwin Knupp and will take charge of the sales department of the business. They have the agency for the Oldsmobile and Chandler cars.

The Sidney Feed store, owned by A. Park on North Street, has been moved across the street into the building at the rear of the Friedman property, the Herzstam homestead. The old feed store building will be torn down and a residence erected upon the spot by Mrs. William Haslup.

An American force, numbering between 5,000 and 8,000 men, is now in Mexico in pursuit of Francisco Villa, according to an announcement made today by the War Department in Washington.

75 Years

March 18, 1941

At least eight teams are expected to participate in a four county Future Farmers of America district parliamentary procedure contest to be held Saturday at Anna High School. The contest is under the direction of O.A. Augenstein, adviser of the host FFA group. Fred Elsass, of Anna; W.B. Wood, vocational agricultural teacher at Wapakoneta and O.R. Findley, principal at Sidney High School will be the judges.

Shelby County’s remaining representative in the district Class B basketball tournament in Springfield was eliminated last night when the Anna Rockets fell before a strong Tipp City team in the quarterfinals by the score of 62 to 28.

50 Years

March 18, 1966

It was Donald G. Shoemaker, 931 Fair Road, who failed to register for the Sidney Lucky Barrel and thus lost $600 this week.

Shoemaker’s name was selected at Flint’s store, 212 East North Street, Tuesday. After it was determined he had not signed up, the barrel was moved to Subler’s Super Market on South Ohio Avenue, still worth $600.

Willard C. Warner, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Richard McCasland, 330 Grant Street, was recently awarded a plaque as the outstanding citrus student at the University of Florida for 1965.

Warner the husband of the former Kathy McCasland, who has an overall scholastic average of 3.3, plans to join his father in the operation of private groves and a packing house, following graduation.

March 18, 1991

Neighboring Mercer County has resolved its problems with its sheriff. Joe Gilmore was the Mercer County Sheriff for 14 years. He resigned from office in December and was indicted soon thereafter. Gilmore was recently sentenced after being found guilty. He served 32 days of a 120 day sentence and was released. Gilmore was charged with misuse of a county credit card.

The Sidney High School chess team has had a great season. They were league champs. The main players were Shawn Hicks, David Warholak, Jeremy Arthur and his brother Todd Arthur. All of these individuals placed in the league meet.
