June 11, 1895

“The Old Veteran” was the title of the play which packed the opera house to its utmost capacity last evening. The characters were none other that members of Sidney Lodge I.O.O. F. and the play was given for the purpose of raising funds for the new I.O.O.F. children and orphans home at Springfield. The play will be repeated again tomorrow night.

Work has been delayed on the Summit Hotel at Houston because the necessary lumber has not arrived.

100 Years

June 11, 1920

“Happiness,” the senior class play, was presented last evening in the high school auditorium as a part of the commencement-week program. Members of the class included: Marion Cook, Victor Taylor, Corwin Emmons, Annabel Thomas, Helen Clem, Imogene Jones, Herman Bowers, Betty Kiser, and Pearl McClur. Miss Ida Hall directed the play.

The first band concert of the season will be played Thursday night on the east side of the square. The band this year is composed of 16 pieces and is directed by Wilbur Piper. Daniel Lyons will be the vocal soloist for this concert.

Miss Grace Woodruff, of this city, a pupil of Marcian Thalberg, will graduate from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music next Monday.

75 Years

June 11, 1945

An opportunity for the youth of Sidney to go into the gardening business on a big scale is being offered to Sidney boys between 10 and 15 years of age in a project being sponsored by the Child Welfare committee of the Kiwanis club. A group of 36 gardens has been laid out in Parkwood, just west of North Main avenue, for this purpose. Fred Dull, in charge of the program, reports 14 of the lots have already been spoken for.

New officers were elected when members of the Disabled American Veterans met last evening. Charles P. Setsor was named commander; Clarence Allen, senior vice commander; Joseph Schmitmeyer, junior vice commander; Dale Sheeley, adjutant; Eugene Millet, treasurer, and Francis Nearing, service officer.

Dr. T.J. Emely, practicing osteopath, will reopen his offices in the Ohio building tomorrow. The offices have been closed for the past three months while he was recuperating from surgery.

50 Years

June 11, 1970

Brenda Elsass, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Elsass of R.R. 1, Anna, was named Anna Homecoming Queen at the celebration Saturday Night.

She competed against Marilyn Bergman and Jane Baumer. The queen was chosen by the number of votes which cost one cent each.

Port Jefferson Fire Chief Elmer Freistuhler said today that a fire of unusual origin destroyed the Glen Salisbury home on Wall street Saturday night. The fire began at 6:15 p.m. Saturday in the roof of the home.

Freistuhler said it is probable that a bird picked up a lighted cigarette and flew into the nest under the eaves of the home. Damages was estimated at $8,500.

MCCARTYVILLE – Rev. Leo T. Herlihy, 67, of St. Marys avenue, Sidney, retired diocesan priest for the Cincinnati archdiocese, died of a heart attack at 8:10 a.m. today in Wilson Memorial Hospital.

Rev. Herlihy retired in 1967 while a pastor in a Middletown parish. Prior to that he had been priest at Sacred Heart Church, McCartyville, from 1954 to 1958.

Mickey Mantle, just weeks from death because of a liver damaged by cancer and decades of alcohol abuse, underwent a transplant this morning after a donor was found in less than two days.

The potentially life-saving operation came 26 years after the New York Yankees retired Mantle’s uniform No. 7 in a ceremony in June 1969 before more than 60,000 adoring fans at Yankee Stadium.
