SIDNEY — A new home-centric retailer is opening its doors to Shelby County.

Burkes Outlet, a subsidiary of Bealls, Inc. and based out of Florida, first showed signs of their arrival to the Shelby County Community in early December, and has created 25 jobs in the county. According to Karen Filips, director of communications and community affairs with Bealls Support Group, the retailer offers home goods, clothing, toys, and other items of name-brand variety to their customers and boasts savings of up to 70% compared to other retailers.

“We thrill our customers with an ever-changing offering of the latest brands and fashion, while delivering friendly and consistent customer service,” Filips said. “We offer great brands and fashion to outfit the entire family. Our home department offers inspiration and décor solutions for your home and everyday home essentials.”

In addition to offering a wide selection of brands and accessories, Burkes also has a range of stock that is constantly changing; according to Filips, it’s never the same store twice, and customers will have no problem with getting great finds throughout the store.

“It’s all about the thrill of the hunt! It’s the surprises and treasures (customers) find along the way that set us apart from the others,” Filips said. “We will thrill our guests with an ever-changing offering of the latest brands, styles and fashions, in a bright and casual shopping environment while delivering legendary guest service.”

With the pandemic still ongoing, Burkes will be observing the same protocols many retailers in the area are following. Customers can expect frequent cleaning and sanitizing throughout the store and especially in high-traffic areas, cleaning of register and pin pad areas between guests, six foot social distancing increments at checkouts, and temporary restrictions such as closed water fountains. All associates will be utilizing masks for the safety of employees and guests.

In addition to this, the grand opening events for Burkes have been extended over two weeks to allow customers the opportunity to participate in a safe environment. Burkes will have a “soft” opening on Monday, Feb. 8, and their grand opening will be held Thursday, Feb. 11. During the first week, customers can participate in a prize wheel and virtual raffle on Thursday, Feb. 11; a treasure hunt will be held on Friday, Feb. 12; a virtual raffle will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13; and a prize wheel will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14. Treasure hunts will also be held on Thursday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 20, a virtual raffle will be held on Friday, Feb. 19, and a prize wheel will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21. Participants have the opportunity to win a $5 gift card from the prize wheel or a $100 gift card from the virtual raffle.

“Given the uniqueness of the Burkes business model, we anticipate their success in attracting shoppers from outside the county to frequent the Sidney store. This too is an attractive benefit for our local economic well being,” Jeff Raible, president of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, said. “On behalf of the 525 members of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, we welcome Burkes Outlet to our local business community and wish them much success.”

Burkes Outlet, located at 2290 W. Michigan St. in Sidney, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
