SIDNEY — The Sidney Tree Board re-elected Ann Asher as the board chairwoman and Michael Jannides as vice chairman during its first meeting of the year, Thursday, Feb. 18.

Asher was first appointed to the board in 2007 and Jannides in 2011.

The city of Sidney received the 2020 Tree City USA and Growth Award, according to tree board minutes. Asher thanked Brian Green, Sidney street manager/ISA certified arborist, for his work in preparing theapplication for the award.

In other business, the board discussed the upcoming 2021 Arbor Day presentation to be held the morning of Friday, April 30. It will be a scaled down version of Arbor Day, using social distancing, at Longfellow Primary School, 1250 Park St. This year’s event will be held at the same location as was scheduled for last year but was cancelled due to COVID-19. Board members will continue to work on the plans for the event.

Also discussed during the meeting:

• The 2021 Tree City Luncheon, typically held in April. It was noted that the event will likely be canceled.

• 2021 tree plantings in October. Green asked members to consider and submit ideas for planting locations. He suggested planting on North Miami Avenue.

• Tree City USA Growth Award revamped requirements. Green provided information with updated category qualifications. He also suggested updating the tree species list. Green said the city of Sidney should not have a problem obtaining enough points yearly, as it already participates in a majority of the categories’ activities.

The next Sidney Tree Board meeting is set for April 15 at 4 p.m.
