Ready to spring forward

Spring begins soon!

The official first day of spring this year is Saturday, March 20. We are almost there! Ole’ man winters’ grasp is loosening and we can start to see the promise of warmer temperatures coming our way.

Last week my husband almost wrecked the car because I shouted in delight as I saw not one, but two big fat robins! My Aunt Myrtle always told me that robins were a good sign that spring is on the way! I look forward every year to opening up my back patio, getting out the furniture and sitting outside as much as possible. I love to hear the birds singing and watching the trees fill out with beautiful shade giving leaves. The squirrels begin to run back and forth across the neighbors fence, jumping into the trees and running along the limbs.

Spring and Fall are my two favorite seasons of the year, mainly because of the surrounding beauty we see. The colors of spring are bright and hopeful. The grass goes from dirty brown-green to a vibrant and rich deep green. I do not have a green thumb, however, I do enjoy watching the daffodils and tulips start to grow as they reach higher and higher towards the sun. I used to love going trail riding in the spring. The horses were always feeling spunky and ready to get out so it proved to be a good ride. Somehow mine always found all the mud to walk through! Afterwards it took almost as long to clean the saddle, my boots and their legs/hooves as it did to take the ride. But it was worth it to be out in the great outdoors enjoying the freshness of spring.

Baseball and softball will start soon as will track and other spring sports. I have never been a fan that follows one team or another, but I did enjoy watching my boys as they played their favorite sports. Spending the spring and summer at Custenborder field watching them play are some of my favorite memories. Packing a cooler with cold cuts, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and snacks made the day more enjoyable. There is nothing worse than a hungry dad — oh, I meant to say ball player!

Another sign of spring is Daylight Savings Time. I will say that I am not a fan of loosing an hour of sleep. I much prefer it in the fall when I gain an hour! Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 14 so you aren’t late for anything that day.

Overall, Spring is a time of renewal. Time to get back to all the outdoor activities we have missed while cooped up in the house all winter. Time to perhaps try new things, meet new people and start new habits or routines.

If you are 50 years of age or better, the Senior Center of Sidney-Shelby County is a good place to start those new routines and to try new things. Stop down anytime for a tour and two free visits. Find us on Facebook, like and follow us for updates on all that is happing at the Center.

Until I see you at the Center,

Have a Blessed Day.
