March 6, 1896

The Republicans met in their primary. They nominated the following persons for certain offices: W.H. Shaw for mayor; John Guy, marshal; John G, McGune, treasurer; John W. Knox, clerk; R.E. VanHorn, street commissioner; R.O. Bingham and Samuel Piper, waterworks trustees. Of the 280 votes cast for school board, Mrs. May Reddish received 270 votes and John H, Taft, 275. If the 280 votes cast, 48 were cast by women.

The county infirmary directors made their report to the commissioners recently. There are 28 males and 26 females in the infirmary. Expenses for the past six months totaled $4,379.26.

100 years ago

March 6, 1921

A delegation of residents from Botkins will travel to the Ohio General Assembly in Columbus. The question to be asked will be how much assistance will Botkins be able to receive to make a hard surface on the proposed Dixie Highway to be built through their community. A public hearing was held in the village last night and it was decided to send the men to Columbus.

The Scherer American Legion post in Jackson Center has elected new officers. They will be O.R. Coleman, commander; C.P. Journell, vice commander; Opal Morrison, adjutant; Dr. H.C. Clayton, treasurer and Dr. H.M. Sharp, chaplain.

75 years ago

March 6, 1946

There will be an Oldsmobile dealership in Sidney. It was announced the dealership was awarded to Dick Helman Auto Sales. He is presently erecting a dealership on the East North Street just across from the high school.

A new supermarket is being planned for the north side of Sidney. It will be located at the corner of Main Avenue and Russell Road. The proprietors will be B.C. McClure and H.V. Wheeler. These gentlemen currently operate the grocery on West Michigan Avenue.

50 years ago

March 6, 1971

The Lehman boys basketball team achieved a district championship at the expense of the Anna Rockets. Coach Jerry DeLong was at the helm. This will be his second straight regional appearance. The final score was 66-53 in favor of the Cavaliers. The game was played in Hobart arena.

The post-season basketball honors are beginning to come in. Jerry DeLong has been named the Class A Coach of the Year in the Southwest District. His star player, John Freytag, made the first team all-district squad. He is averaging 23 points per game.

Deborah Gaier of Russia wants to be a writer, but her works will not make the popular, thriller lists. She finds here inspiration from the desperately poor by looking at their experiences and religious faith. The Russia native traveled to Honduras a spart of a course entitled “Religion and Anthropology,” offered by the College of Mt. Joseph in Cincinnati. Her experiences will not only shape her writing but her life going forward. She saw the worst examples of poverty and the greatest examples of faith. She was also inspired by the work of Rev. Emil Cook, who leads an orphanage in Honduras.
