March 12. 1896

The matter of a new school building for Sidney was discussed at the board of education meeting last night. Board members felt a new building was needed. It should house the high school, superintendent’s office, a room for board meetings. If space allows, room for the grammar and primary grades should be included.

The committee formed to investigate a baseball club for Sidney has met with some success. The members were out today. Almost $100 was raised toward the project.

100 years ago

March 12, 1921

There will be a new enterprise in Botkins. It will be the Botkins Lumber Company. The officers of the new company include W.C. Heinrich, president, Henry Stegerman, vice president, H.E. Sheets, treasurer, and directors: Jacob Gehrlich, E.S. Sheets, W.T. and A.C. Zaenglein. H.E. Sheets will serve as manager.

Officers were elected when the general membership of the Womens Club. Mrs. L.A . Dolling will serve as president; Mrs. R.F. Boyer, vice-president; Mrs. Laird Staley, secretary, and Mrs. Morris Line. treasurer.

75 years ago

March 12. 1946

By a vote of 34-3, the Sidney Retail Merchants Association, Inc., voted to disband. The assets of the group will be transferred to the retail committee of the Civic Association. President H.B. Blake reported the matter has been under study for some time.

Matin L. Reymert, PhD, will be the gust speaker in Sidney in the coming week to speak at the high school auditorium. He will talk about “Children in Reconversion.” The event is being sponsored by the Women of the Moose. It is their first sponsored event.

50 years ago

March 12, 1971

There will be a change in Judge Marshall’s office staff. Herman Dieters, who has been on the judge for two months said he resigned to take a higher paying job. He will be replaced by Lester F. Curtner, Jr. Curtner will be paid $9,800 a year.

Sidney will be getting a Pizza Hut. The nationally franchised company will build at 422 North Main Avenue. The land was previously occupied by the Sidney Grain Machinery Company and owned by Robert Hepler. The construction firm who is building the facility is from Cincinnati.

25 years ago

March 12, 1996

The Sidney High School Lady Jacket basketball team is poised to prove something. After finishing as the Dayton area’s top rated team during the regular season, Dayton Chaminade moved pas the Jackets to the top spot on the strength of their impressive win over Cincinnati McAuley. Sidney will now play Chaminade in the regional semi-finals. The team coached by Maggie Williams, sports a 23-1 record.

There has been much talk about the internet. Those wanting to know more about it will be able to learn. The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a seminar on the subject, entitled, “Business Introduction to the Internet.”
