NEW KNOXVILLE – April 2 is the deadline for any artist or studio to submit a proposal suggesting ways to represent Neil Armstrong in large two-dimensional mural project at Neil Armstrong Airport.

Airport Manager Ted Bergstrom said the vision of the New Terminal Building Mural Committee is to enhance the historic connection between Neil A. Armstrong and Auglaize County, incorporating his passion for aviation and space flight.

The committee includes Rachel Barber, Auglaize County Historical Society; Erica Preston, county administrator; Brad Smith, Auglaize County Airport Authority secretary; and Bergstrom. The New Bremen Foundation is underwriting the project.

More information on the project can be found at the Auglaize County website, the Airport’s Facebook page, and in the original posting on the Ohio Arts Council website. Bergstrom said inquiries can also be directed to him at 419-753-2810 or [email protected].

The mural, which could be made of vinyl, paint or fabric media, would be completed inside the entry way of the new terminal on a 51-foot wide, 13-foot high wall. Additional lighting may also be added. It would need to be completed by Oct. 31, 2021. Additional depiction will be found in the application packet.

Bergstrom said the winning mural should include key points of Armstrong’s career and include a timeline of the Neil Armstrong Airport and Auglaize County. The artist or studio would also engage the local artistic community through educational programming arranged by the mural committee. Those activities could include volunteer participation, meet the artist opportunities.
