SIDNEY — Alpha Community Center moved to a new location on Children’s Home Road in Sidney and continues to aid anyone in need. Community Foundation Match Day gifts will help Alpha Center continue its four main areas of serving meals, offering an emergency pantry, providing children’s and adult’s programming and assisting with rent and utility bills.

“Match Day funding will continue to support our mission of feeding and caring for our clients: the homeless, the drug addicted, those on fixed incomes, those with at risk families and children and basically anyone who comes through our doors,” said Jan Geuy, executive director. “Now that dine-in has returned, we are serving eight to 15 people at breakfast, 25 to 30 at lunch and about 20 at Chapel. The shuttle bus is still going to the old Alpha Center building to pick up clients, but so far, none of the other stops have gathered a following.”

Alpha Community Center is located on the same campus as Mercy Mission House Emergency Shelter and Bridges Community Action Partnership. Holy Angels Soup Kitchen continues to partner with Alpha to serve lunch. Seven hundred people pass through the Center’s doors in an average year, with more than 22,000 meals served. With the holidays arriving, Alpha Center’s Christmas food boxes will be handed out on Monday, Dec. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To support Alpha Community Center on Match Day, gifts must be made payable to the Community Foundation of Shelby County with: Match/Alpha Community Center noted on the memo or in an accompanying note or form. Details and forms are available at the Community Foundation website at commfoun.com and at Alpha Community Center, 950 Childrens Home Road, Sidney. Gifts must be received on or before Nov. 30 to be eligible for matching money. Credit card gifts may be made only on Nov. 30.

The Community Foundation of Shelby County holds its Match Day event annually on Giving Tuesday. Twenty-three local charities will ask supporters to make a gift to the Community Foundation that will be matched up to a total of $5,000 per charity.

Match Day participating organizations have a 501(c)(3) tax status and an organization fund within the Community Foundation of Shelby County with an asset balance exceeding the Foundation’s fund minimum. Gifts received will not be placed into an organization’s fund, but instead will be returned to the organization for its work in the community.
