FISH presents 2022 Angel Award

SIDNEY — The Angel Award for FISH of Shelby County was presented during the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and Annual Membership Meeting.

Irene and Gene Berning were awarded FISH’s “Angel Award” 2022 which is given each year to a volunteer who contributes more than average service to FISH as well as to others in the community. FISH volunteers nominate fellow volunteers for this annual award. Winners of this award in the recent past include Darla Cabe, Mary Bensman, Donna Gross, Mary Miller and Kathy Hellman.

The luncheon was held at Cornerstone Church in Sidney. A short business meeting was conducted by FISH president Darla Cabe, which included sharing information of FISH statistics for 2021. Groups, organizations and individuals in Shelby County that FISH is able to help were reported. Updates of FISH policies and news were also shared. A new member of the FISH Board of Directors, Jean Harmon, of Jackson Center, was welcomed to the board and current board member Doris Brock’s membership on the board was renewed.

Volunteers who received special recognition of years of service include:

• 5 years of FISH Service – Carol Dunkel, Sandy Gehret, Kathi Klauss, Bob Miller, Mary Ann Pence, Leisa Saunders, Jane Ulrich , Bob Wyen

• 10 Years of FISH Service – Bonnie Banks and Joyce Rodgers

• 15 Years of FISH Service – Gene and Irene Berning

• 20 Years of FISH Service – Betty Seitz

• More than 20 Years of FISH Service – Darla Cabe, Donna Gross, Carol Brecount, Doris Brock

• More than 30 Years of FISH Service – Sue Wilding

• More than 40 Years of FISH SERVICE – Lois Reithman

Following the meeting, lunch was served which was catered by The Spot Restaurant. After lunch, the group was entertained with a music program provided by Cabe and MaKenna Russell, who is the client coordinator/office manager at FISH. Music was selected and shared with the group with FISH service and friendships in mind. Cabe and Russell performed solos, duets and invited the entire group to sing-a-long for the traditional hymn ‘Amazing Grace” and the patriotic “God Bless America.” The event was concluded with door prizes being given out to volunteers as well as each volunteer receiving his/her annual “Payday” candy bar.

Door prizes were kindly donated by Crossway Farms, ReVive Home Decor, Shoe Sensation, Dekkers Flower Shop, Sidney Tire, The Spot Restaurant, Amelio’s Pizzeria, People’s Federal & Savings, Ivy Garland, Allison’s Jewelry, Sidney Foodtown and Meal Prep Life.

FISH is grateful for these donations and for the assistance and support of Pastor Harry Peterson and the staff of Cornerstone Church. FISH is also most grateful for the support of the community through donations to FISH, shopping at our thrift store and monetary gifts. The Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was planned and organized under the direction of FISH board members Syble Andrews and Patt Van Skiver.
