NEW BREMEN – The New Bremen Local School District Board of Education learned the school bus garage completion has been delayed. The board learned about the delay at its Wednesday, Sept. 21, meeting that

Superintendent Jason Schrader said the construction of the 50- by 109-foot Bus & Maintenance Facility project had some delays which resulted in the contractor could not meet the Sept. 26 completion deadline.

However, said Schrader “We expect to move in our equipment by the end of the month.”

Luginbill Construction was awarded a $430,789 contract to build a new facility, located at the northeast corner of the school property off Cardinal Drive. The construction began in June 2022.

Junior and Senior school principal Marcus Overman reported they had created a solution for the problem of students missing assignments.

“After a student accrues three or more missed assignments in one class, they are required to attend a new 7:15 a.m. study table,” he said. “I hope they will find that coming in at 7:15 a.m. is not enjoyable and will get their work in on time.”

He said they had implemented an additional resource this year in the 7-12 ELA classes called CommonLit. The program has many advantages such as benchmark assessments, varied reading levels, guided questions, and more, he maintained.

“Teachers are liking the resource and students have made positive comments on the reading selections,” he added.

Finally, Overman said he has been around various classrooms watching teaching, completing walk-throughs and observations.

“I could not be more pleased with the instruction that I am seeing in the classroom, and the engagement that the students currently have,” he said.

Elementary principal Diane Kramer reported throughout the school year they will be focusing on several goals.

For one, she said safety plans will be updated to reflect the addition of the elementary building to assist in preparing students and staff for potential threats to safety.

Another goal is the school’s PBIS, Positive Behavior Intervention Supports program begun last school year will continue with the theme of “Protect the Nest” to focus on student and staff mental health.

She said the third goal is continuing to invest resources in the school’s phonics and literacy programs in response to Ohio’s Dyslexia Law and begin implementing components of the law.

Finally, she said, “New Bremen Elementary has had a great start to the 2022-2023 school year! This year we welcomed 428 students in grades K-6 with several new staff members. New educational aides include Lauren Hegelberger in kindergarten and Jennifer Paulus in fifth grade. New teaching staff include Emily Clinehens, innovative technology, Paxton Cesaroni, sixth grade language arts, and Craig Szymczak, elementary physical education.”

Athletic Director Chad Wells updated the board on September activities.

He said Senior Night for Football/Golf/CC/Band will be Oct. 14 vs Minster while Senior Night for Volleyball will be Oct 11, 2022, also vs Minster.

He also shared the OHSAA tournament information. Boys Golf Sectionals will be held Sept. 29 at Colonial Golf Course, while Girls Golf Sectionals are Sept. 27 at the Moose Landing Golf Course. Cross Country Districts will be on Oct. 22 at Columbus Grove.
