PORT WASHINGTON — A five-year-old Sidney boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Tuscarawas County.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Elijah D. Ellis, 5, was a passenger in a Honda CRV driven by his father, Justice Ellis, 25, of Sidney. Elijah was transported from the crash scene to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he died.

Elijah was a kindergarten student at Longfellow Primary School, Sidney. A One Call was sent out to Longfellow parents Sunday afternoon. Counselors will be on hand during the week to assist any student or staff member who needs help.

“Today we had morning meetings in grade levels to discuss the loss of Elijah and allow the students to talk about it,” said Longfellow Principal Michelle Link. “We also have multiple counselors on hand to talk to students and staff members individually as needed. In the coming days we will be thinking of ways to honor Elijah’s memory.”

The crash, which happened at 10:54 a.m. Saturday occurred when Ellis, who was eastbound on US 36 near High Street drove across the double yellow line and off the left side of the roadway, striking a parked Dodge Caravan.

Elijah was sitting in the left rear passenger seat at the time of the crash. Troopers are investigating whether the proper use of a child booster seat was in place at the time of the crash.

Justice Ellis was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He sustained minor injuries in the crash and was not transported to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.

Funeral arrangements for Elijah are pending at Adams Funeral Home, Sidney.
