SIDNEY — A Wednesday morning shooting at Sidney Foodtown has left one person dead.

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office Spokesperson Steve Irwin, the Sidney Police Department requested the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) investigate a fatal officer involved shooting. The identity of the person killed was not released. Irwin said the name should be released Thursday.

Irwin said BCI was at the scene Wednesday where they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. The evidence will be processed as they continue their investigation.

Interim Sidney Police Chief Bill Shoemaker said the department’s 911 dispatch center received numerous calls around 8 a.m. concerning an armed man entering Sidney Foodtown. The callers reported shots were fired.

All Sidney officers and detectives, along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, said Shoemaker. Officers made entry into the store and encountered an armed suspect near the front door. The suspect was shot and transported to Wilson Health.

No officers or civilians were injured in the incident.

More than one officer, he said, was involved in the shooting. They have been placed on administrative leave.

Because it was an officer involved shooting, he said, BCI is handling the investigation.

Foodtown was closed after the shooting as BCI collected evidence at the scene. Shoemaker said he wasn’t sure when BCI would be done at the scene nor when the store would reopen.

All further information regarding the shooting will be released by BCI.
