January 10, 1898
Two young men from Bellefontaine who have been in the habit of beating their way to Sidney on a passenger train and returning in the same manner on the Knickerbocker passenger train were placed under arrest last night. They were taken off the front end of the Knickerbocker by Policeman Ague. After being locked up a couple of hours they were released. They returned home on a freight. Now they will probably discontinue their visits to Sidney.

At a meeting last week to stimulate interest in the Boy Scout program in Shelby county, Carl Custenborder was named chairman of the committee for Troop No. 1. He will be assisted by Hugh Bingham, Prof. H.A. Hartman, Howard Amos, Ira Killian, and C.F. Rendeln. H.C. Prather was selected as scoutmaster for a second Troup. The committee for this troop includes: Dr. J.F. Richeson, Robert Bertsch, Arthur Allinger, Ed Mede, and Harry Oldham.

Five new directors were elected and a sixth was re-elected to the board of directors of the Sidney Civic Association during the annual election conducted by mail during the past week. New directors named include: Emerson Deam, Dunson Supply Co., and Ray Steinle, Steinle Drugs, in the retail classification; R.G. Berg, Copeland Refrigeration, and Roy E. Fry, Sidney Tanning Co., industrial classification; William Kingseed was re-elected in the general classification. He served during the past year, completing the unexpired term of John Sexauer.

Common Pleas Judge Huber A. Beery today notified the Slusser-McLean Scraper Co. and the union that he is willing to act as a mediator in the current labor controversy which has closed the firm’s two plants since early November.

January 10, 1973
Robert W. McMahan, manager of Jacoby’s Inc., has been elected to succeed David Monnin as president of the commercial division of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce for 1973.
Ken Garmertsfelder, first vice president, and Don Thompson, second vice president, will assist McMahan in his administrative duties.

Alfred Hartings, a member of the Knight of St. John, Maria Stein, was honored Saturday evening when a Mass, program and dance were held. Hartings has been named supreme ruler of all Knight of St. John commandries throughout the eastern part of the U.S. The Maria Stein commandry is one of the largest in the country.

Norman Smith, Shelby County prosecutor, has appointed John D. Schmitt as assistant prosecuting attorney.
Schmitt, originally from Fort Recovery, has practiced law in Sidney since 1970 when he joined the law firm of Garmhausen, Kerrigan & Elsass.
He received his law degree form Ohio Northern University in Ada, earned his undergraduate degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1966 and his masters degree from the same institution the following year.

DETROIT (AP) – With emissions standards much on the auto industry’s mind, the nation’s two largest automakers are intensifying their race to create more environmentally friendly vehicles.
General Motors Corp. said it may be able to produce a hybrid-electric vehicle by 2004.
Chrysler Corp. is scheduled to introduce its own version of an environmentally friendly car, using light weight materials to help achieve high mileage.
And Ford Motor Co., No. 2 behind GM, said all of the traditionally gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles it makes in the 1999 model year will have emissions standards as clean as most cars on the road today.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif (AP) – Rep. Sonny Bono, the mustachioed, self-deprecating half of the Sonny and Cher duo who gave up his entertainment career for city hall and then Capitol Hill, died in a skiing accident. He was 62.
