WAPAKONETA — The investigation into the standoff at a residence east of Minster on state Route 119 is continuing.

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said Wednesday morning that deputies, detectives, Special Response Team members, Minster Fire Department and the Allen County Bomb Squad remained at the scene until late Tuesday evening searching the residence and outbuildings for explosives and weapons.

A handgun and knives were located along with several items that had been made to appear to be explosives, said Solomon. There were no actual explosives found, he said.

The handgun is believed to be the same weapon that the 38-year-old suicidal man held to his chin at the time deputies arrived, said Solomon. A juvenile male, who was removed from the residence, was still inside when the suicidal male made the gesture with the weapon.

“We have great employees as do the other agencies, and all did a great job with a tough situation. We train and sometimes question the amount of training but the result here is the benefit of great people and proper training,” said Solomon.

The suspect was transported to the scene to the hospital by the Minster Area Life Squad, said Solomon.

The standoff began Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. when the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a man with a gun who was held up in a house. They had also received information that there might be some type of explosives at the residence.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were Minster and New Bremen Police, the Minster Area Life Squad and Fire Department, St. Marys Police, The Ohio State Highway Patrol, The Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office. The West Ohio Regional Homeland Security Emergency Management Lighting and Command mobile unit was on the scene also.
