Salvation Army seeks school supplies

SIDNEY — The Salvation Army has placed 25 yellow barrels in locations throughout Sidney in the hope that area residents will fill them with school supplies for needy children.

“That’s about double from last year,” said Betty Schutte, of Sidney, a volunteer who helps with the School Tools project. Major Sharon Payne, of the Salvation Army, is overseeing the drive.

The supplies will be stuffed into 450-500 backpacks for students headed back to school this fall. The items needed include Elmer’s glue sticks, Elmer’s white glue, Crayola Crayons in boxes of eight, 24 and 48, spiral notebooks, scissors, Pink Pearl erasers, No. 2 pencils, pens, rulers with inch and centimeter markings, Crayola markers, Crayola colored pencils, folders with pockets, wide-ruled notebook paper, watercolor paints and school boxes.

Most of the barrels have been set in industires and churches. The general public can add supplies to barrels at Shoe Sensation, 2350 Michigan St., Sidney Foodtown, 1010 Wapakoneta Ave., and the Sidney Daily News, 1451 N. Vandemark Road. Donors also can drop off supplies at the Salvation Army, 419 Buckeye St.

Schutte said monetary donations are also welcomed.

“Because a lot of times, we don’t have enough of one thing, and then we go out and buy it,” she said. Checks payable to the Salvation Army can be mailed to the address above.

“Earmark it in the memo line for ‘School Tools,’” Schutte said.

The barrels will be available through Aug. 10.
