SIDNEY — Sidney Police have closed their investigation of a fatal, single-vehicle crash that occurred June 26 near downtown Sidney.

Neal Duffman III, 23, of Kenton, died July 1 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton of injuries suffered in the crash. Duffman and a passenger, Claire Frantz, 27, of Sidney, were taken to the Dayton hospital from Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney after the 10:45 p.m. accident. Both were initially in critical condition. Frantz later was released from the hospital.

Sidney Police Sgt. Rob Jameson said his investigation indicated a combination of speed, rain and wet street conditions caused the crash. With Duffman’s death, the case has been closed, Jameson said.

According to a police accident report, Duffman was driving a pickup truck eastbound on West Court Street, east of Wilkinson Avenue, when he attempted to change lanes and lost control of the vehicle. The truck hit the curb and went off the right side of the roadway. The driver’s side of the vehicle struck a bridge abutment and the truck came to rest facing westbound. A car was eastbound on Court Street at the time of the crash. Debris from the pickup truck hit that car.
