Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart, left, and Sidney Civic Band Director Phil Chilcote look over the program for Friday’s concert, during which the band will honor Lenhart.

The Sidney Civic Band performs on the courtsquare during its 2014 season. Concerts will resume Friday, June 12.

SIDNEY — The Sidney Civic Band begins its 38th consecutive summer series of concerts, June 12, at 7 p.m. on the courthouse square.

The theme of the opening concert is Oldies But Goodies — favorites of the Civic Band’s audience through the years. Selections will include “Ragtime Overture,” “Gypsy Love Song,” “Patton,” “El Capitan March,” “Big Band Showcase” and “Hello Dolly.”

During the second half of the concert, the band will recognize Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart. Lenhart will receive the 2015 National Sheriff of the Year award in Baltimore later this month. In honor of this occasion, the Shelby County Sheriff’s color guard will present the colors.

The band will include local high school students in its Apprentice Program, giving the students an opportunity to play with experienced players and learn new techniques. They are Seth Regula, trombone, of Jackson Center; Emily Reinhart, clarinet, of Lehman; Quentin McKenzie, alto sax, of Sidney; Kambria Hamilton, horn, of Fairlawn; Sarah Kellar, clarinet, of Fairlawn.

Refreshments will be available for purchase from Connection Point Church of God Relay for Life team, beginning 30 minutes prior to the concert. A Spot pie will be given to the winner of the Spot Pie Question, and a tray of baked goods from Sidney’s Bob Evans restaurant will also go to a lucky fan.

“We are really looking forward to this year’s concert season,” said Director Phil Chilcote. “We just get better every year and you know, the audience has more fun every year, as well.” The series will include six concerts, with all but one to be on the north side of the courthouse.

“The Band will play for the Fourth of July fireworks at Sidney High School. It was well-attended last year and a real success. We want everyone to come over. The tennis courts are the perfect spot for viewing the fireworks and listening to the band,” said Chilcote. “This year, the band is honored to be performing at the Field of Valor and Traveling Vietnam Wall at Custenborder Field on Sept. 3. We will perform our patriotic concert and 9-11 memorial concert at this event.”

Themes of the summer series include Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Swing Era Big Band, Patriotic Concert with Fireworks, Dancing in the Moonlight and Finale Pops/Memorial Concert.

In case of rain, Friday’s concert will be at Connection Point Church of God, 1510 Campbell Road.
