MANSFIELD — The granddaughter of Russia residents was crowned Miss Ohio 2016 Saturday night at the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield, Ohio.

Miss Portsmouth Alice Magoto, 18, daughter of Mike and Joeliene “Julie” Magoto, received a $10,000 scholarship for her win. She bested a field of 19 other contestants for the title. She is the grandaughter of Norbert and Martha Magoto, of Russia.

She recently graduated from Seton High School and will put her college plans on hold until after her reign. She hopes to become a Political Science major and write legislation dealing with her platform, “Healthy Confidence: The New Definition of Beauty.”

For the competition, Magoto performed a vocal number from “Little Women” titled “Astonishing.” For the performance, she wore a bright yellow, one-shoulder gown. Her talent performance also won her a $500 scholarship preliminary talent award. In Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimwear, Magoto sported a bright pink two-piece suit. Her evening gown was a white ballgown with red flower accents and black and blue detail. The dress was Magoto’s prom dress that her and her mother added crystals to.

Magoto will compete for the title of Miss America on Sept. 11, 2016, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Miss Mansfield, Lexi Richter, of New Breman, received a $1,000 scholarship and finished in the top 11. Miss Lake Festival, Veronica Wende, of Lima, also finished in the top 11 and received a $1,000 scholarship. The semifinalist interview award went to Wende.

This year’s program awarded more than $52,000 in scholarships.
