MONTEZUMA — The body of a 10-year-old girl was found Saturday just hours after she was reported missing near Grand Lake.

Jade Riggs’ body was found at 1:56 p.m. by firefighters searching a channel to the lake, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said.

The girl’s grandfather last saw her alive at 5:30 a.m. when he left for work. The Montezuma Fire Department was called to an area just west of Montezuma at 7:34 a.m. to begin a search, Grey said.

Authorities said they believe Riggs woke, left the house, and wandered away from home early Saturday morning. She loved to go to the water and throw stones in. Authorities surmise she fell in the water, Grey said.

About 90 first responders came together to search area woods, fields and water, Grey said.
