Fair goat, chicken sales break records

SIDNEY — Friday’s Junior Fair livestock sale at the Shelby County Fair featured chickens, cattle, goats, lambs and ducks.

Records were set in the sales of the grand champion and reserve grand champion goats and the reserve grand champion meat pen of chickens.

Jonathan Yenser, 17, of Botkins, sold his grand champion boer goat for $13,100, beating the record set in 2015 by $50. The reserve champion goat, shown by Katie Egbert, of Botkins, surpassed 2015’s $6,000 record by $2,500. It sold for $8,500. Reilly Sommer’s pen of fryers brought $2,200. The previous record for a reserve grand champion pen was 2013’s $1,800 price.

Reilly, 13, is the daughter of Lisa and Andy Sommer, of Anna. She is a member of McCartyville Producers 4-H.

“It was exciting (to show chickens),” she said, especially after last year’s ban. Reilly plans to save the prize money to cover her future tuition at law school.

Yenser, son of Donna and Andy Yenser, has been showing goats since he was 8. This is his first grand champion. The Botkins High School senior is a member of Botkins Livestock 4-H.

Winning was “a pretty cool experience,” he said. “When I came in, I knew it was going to be a tough show, a lot of competition. So I tried to stay positive.” He and his brother, Jacob 11, who garnered a reserve grand champion ribbon for his breeding goat, raise 10 to 15 goats each year in addition to the family’s breeding stock. Because each contestant can show just two goats, Yenser had to do his own preliminary judging at home.

“You have to look for the best of the best to bring here,” he said. He entered the same goat in the state fair, where it won fourth place in its class.

Setting a record for sales surprised him.

“That was something I didn’t expect doing. $13,000 is pretty neat. It will go toward college. I don’t know where I want to go yet, but I want to go for firefighting and paramedics.”

Petite Amber Zimpfer, 13, daughter of Molly and Ted Zimpfer, of Anna, pulled and prodded her 1,297-pound grand champion steer into the sales ring and exited with $6,100.

“Welcome to the little state fair steer show,” announced auctioneer Johnny Regula as she did so. “This is a plum good steer. I’ve never seen a better one.”

“I was hoping I’d win,” Amber said. She plans to put the sale money into her savings account. Amber noted that she had some anxious moments after the cattle show, where her steer was weighed.

“It didn’t want to eat or drink for the first two days of the fair. He couldn’t walk right because he wasn’t getting oxygen to his legs. Monday, he started eating, after we changed his feed,” she said.

The reserve grand champion steer was shown by Carter Huelskamp, 18, of Anna. A member of Anna Livestock 4-H, he has shown for nine years and has earned grand champion and reserve ribbons before. Although the steer was “pretty wild when I got him,” Huelskamp was pretty certain he had a winner this year, too.

“I did pretty good in the winter shows,” Hueslkamp said. “I did a lot of breaking him, spent a lot of time with him.” The Anna High School graduate will use his $3,700 sale money to help pay his tuition at the Hobart Institute of Welding Tech in Troy.

Cade Allison’s grand champion pen of meat fryer chickens brought $700 at the sale. The 14-year-old son of Cari and Dean Allison, of rural Port Jefferson, is a member of Successful 4-H. He has won ribbons for his chickens in the past and thought last year, when he couldn’t show them, was “kind of a bummer.”

Sister and brother Tayler, 15, and Tanner, 16, Robbins, of Anna, got both ribbons for their single fryers. Tayler’s was the grand champion and Tanner’s was the reserve champion. They are children of Michelle and Rodney Robbins. Their prize-winning chickens brought $1,250 and $1,300, respectively. They are members of McCartyville Producers 4-H and plan to use the money to fund next year’s fair projects.

The reserve grand champion ribbon for a single broiler went to Lauren Monnin, 16, of Russia. This was a first win for the Russia Livestock 4-H member and daughter of Kathy and Alex Monnin.

“It was kind of sad last year (with no poultry at the fair),” she said. “It’s fun to bring them here, expecialy when little kids come up and want to pet them.” She got $300 for the sale of her bird.
