URBANA — The Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Fund housed at Urbana University will host two events this year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001, including Alicia Nicole Titus, a longtime resident of Champaign County.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Urbana University Student Center, the Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. The 5K and 1 mile Walk/Run for Peace starts and finishes at the Student Center with live music, post-race food, unique awards and lots of peace-building activities for children. First responders will be honored and are invited to participate; the team with the most participants will be presented a special “traveling” award made from one of the steel beams of the World Trade Center Towers. On Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m., Urbana University’s Student Center will be the site of a special event, a “Community Day of Remembrance,” to honor those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. John and Bev Titus, parents of Alicia and co-founders of the Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Fund, will give a brief talk; the World House Choir will perform; and Marianne Williamson, bestselling author and world-renowned teacher, will give the keynote address. Her latest book is “Tears to Triumph: The Spiritual Journey from Suffering to Enlightenment.”
The Titus’s consider Williamson a personal friend who has helped them considerably over the years in their own healing journey after Alicia’s death.
“Marianne has been a wise and loving presence in our lives since the death of Alicia; her warm compassion and wise counsel has helped us turn our grief into a force for good and given us hope in times of despair,” John Titus said.
