Lockington man in Piqua hit/run before deadly car crash

SIDNEY — A Lockington man was involved in a hit and run accident in Piqua on Monday, just minutes prior to his death in Shelby County.

According to the Piqua Police Department Chief Bruce Jamison, Charles W. Lawrence, 55, of Lockington, was involved in “a minor accident” at the intersection of High and Downing streets at approximately 3:52 p.m. Monday.

At 4:01 p.m., the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle accident with injuries in the 1000 block of Patterson-Halpin Road in Washington Township. Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office.

According to deputies, Lawrence was traveling northbound on Patterson-Halpin Road, when for an unknown reason, his Dodge Stratus ran off the roadway to the left. The vehicle continued north, striking a tree head-on.

According to Piqua police reports, Lawrence was reportedly at fault in the Piqua accident and did not stop at the original scene. Also according to the accident report, the other driver caught up to Lawrence down the road. The other driver reportedly jumped out and approached Lawrence, who said, “I have insurance.” Before giving the other driver his insurance information, Lawrence drove off again.
