October 6, 1891
One of the leading shoe manufactuers of Ohio made a proposition in the Board of Improvement last evening to move his factory here. He wants a two-story building with a basement and a cash bonsus. His figures are high and it is probable that he will have to change them if he hopes to do business here. He is working 90 hands now and he said he would start here with 100 and increase that number to 150 in eight months.

A large crowd visited the Harvey Clothing store yesterday in connection with the fall opening of the newly remodeled store. Manager Rhees and clerks extended all a cordial welcome. The store is now one of the most handsome in this part of the state.

“Grace Hussey” the Sidney-owned trotter, continues to attract favorable comment on appearances throughout the South. The “Memphis Commercial” this week carried a lengthy story on the trotter’s accomplishments in the state.

Appointment of Herman Albers of Sidney, as an interviewer was announced today by Herschel C. Atkinson, administrator of the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation.

Earl Woddell, county engineer, and Clark Pruden and Fred Middletown, county commissioners, are in Cincinnati today to discuss with WPA officials the matter of new road and the bridge projects in the country.

Miss Phyllis Conner has accepted a position as assistant technician at the Findlay hospital, going there today to take up her duties. She is a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.F. Conner and a graduate of Ohio State University.

Two Sidney young men were among those announced Wednesday as having passed the recent bar examination .They are Rodney Blake, Bon Air Circle and Harry Faulkner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Faulkner, South Main Avenue. Both young men completed their law work at Ohio Northern University earlier this year.

Jerry Knoop came close to a 700 series in his kegling with the Shelby County League at Bel-Mar Lanes Wednesday evening. Also approaching 250 with a 249. Jerry registered a neat 683 as he paced Auto View Theater in a 6-2 victory over Werst Printing.

Urging blacks to establish “a sense of the future”, the daughter of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. brought her message to Sidney Friday night for the Ohio Conference of NAACP branches. The Rev. Bernice King, the youngest child of the slain civil rights leader prodded the audience to take control of their lives by setting a positive example for black youth to counteract the negative influences of the mass media. She spoke at the First United Methodist Church.

Sidney Mayor William McMillen has proclaimed this weekend NAACP Weekend in recognition of the city serving as the host for the 61st state convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Persons. The proclamation notes that the NAACP has been in the forefront of the fight for equality and justice for all mankind for 82 years. The Tri-County Branch of the NAACP is hosting the convention. The programs and workshops are geared toward helping delegates better serve their communities in securing equal educational and employment opportunities.
