All the dry goods stores in Sidney will be closed on Christmas Day. The banks will also be closed.

Pollution of the river is subject to a heavy penalty. The water works trustees’ jurisdiction extends 10 miles up the stream, and in this is included all branches entering the river. Yesterday a gang of roving gypsies buried a horse in a branch of Plum Creek, near the old Mowry farm in Franklin Township.

100 Years

December 12, 1916

The association named to make arrangements for bringing a community nurse to Sidney announced today that the services of Miss Gertrude E. Williams, of Cleveland, have been obtained. She will report for work here on Jan. 1, 1917.

75 Years

December 12, 1941

The United States today was officially at war with all members of the axis alliance, Germany, Italy and Japan, following action taken by both the house and senate in declaring war on Germany, and Italy after those countries declared war on the United States. Thus was the world plunged into the most titanic conflict in history to determine the future of civilization.

General Douglass McArthur at his headquarters in Manila today announced the landing of Japanese troops at two points in the Philippines. The communique indicated that the Nippon troops had come ashore both north and south of Manila, indicating a pinchers movement against that city.

50 Years

December 12, 1966

Corn picking, halted several weeks ago by weather and elevator jams, has resumed on a fairly wide scale basis in Shelby County fields, a survey showed today. Ground conditions, however, remained uncertain and operators stood little better than an even chance of escaping from being bogged down in mud. Farmers were finding that more stalks were on the ground than when picking halted. Estimates of damage on corn still in fields ran to 25 percent, or even higher.

25 Years

December 12, 1991

A metal building is under construction on Commercial Drive off Ohio 29, to be used by Freshway Foods. Ferguson Construction Co. of Sidney is general contractor for the building owned by BGS Partnership, said Herbert Schlater, a partner. The building will be 12,000 square feet and is to be completed in the spring of 1992
