URBANA — The ninth annual Simon Kenton Chili Cook -Off Festival, in downtown Urbana, will be Sept. 26 and it’s not too late to register to cook the world’s best chili or create the best salsa.

The grand prize for the best chili will be $1,000. Second through fifth places will take home additional prize monies totaling $1,000. Each contestant is required to provide all materials needed to prepare the chili on site. Chili must be prepared from scratch, no precooking of meat or chopping vegetables prior to set up.

The early entry fee is $25 until Sept. 15. After that date, registration is $35.

The best salsa contest does not require that salsa be prepared at the festival. It may be made ahead and submitted at the Masonic Temple between 10:30 and 11 a.m. on festival day, Sept. 26. Salsas must be made from scratch, using fresh ingredients or canned items. Salsa cannot be purchased or restaurant-produced. A copy of the recipe, listing all the ingredients and instructions, must be submitted with the entry. The first-place prize is $100; and second place winner will receive $50.

There is no entry fee for the salsa contest.

All entry forms and rules are at www.chilicookoffofurbana.com. For information, call 614-440-7560.

Additonal contests, not requiring advance registraton, will include a jalapeno-eating contest, the Suck (suck a lemon) Chew (chew crackers) and Blow (blow a bubble) contest and a corn hole tournament. Registration for these events will be on the day of the festival at the Welcome Booth.

The festival also offers live entertainment, and a dedicated children’s area with games and prizes. The Hoopla parade, featuring the Antioch Shriners, will start the festivities at noon.
